WELL, THIS HAD BEEN ONE hell of a day.
Some days just felt like bad karma from the start. That was how today had felt for Gabrielle Leon, at least. First, waking up to an empty house; sheâd known why Anjulie had left early, known sheâd had to oversee Huangâs transfer, but deep down that part of Gabi that blamed herself for everything whispered, She just wants to be away from you. You crossed a line, and now she canât stand to be around you.
Gabi damned well knew that was all in her head. Her anxiety throwing shit on Anjulie that the woman never thought, never felt, never saidâbut when you were the problem in a relationship problem, all you could ever see was that it was your fault and of course you felt the other person never forgot that for even a second, although in reality it was the furthest thing from their mind.
Gabrielle always had more trouble forgiving herself than others had forgiving her.
So she had started the day unsettled, the house too empty, breakfast too quiet, just her and Roscoe, half her bacon gone into that little demanding red ball of fluffâs gullet.
Then second: dealing with another day of watching Matheson and Daniella being entirely unsubtle, coy little knowing looks and veiled comments and a certain smarmy syrupiness they didnât even realize but that screamed to anyone else we fuckin, we fuckin, good golly Miss Molly, we fuckin. For the first half of the day, Gabi had felt completely alone in a room with people who spoke a language she didnât understand, shut on the outside.
She wouldnât care if both of them would just do their job, rather than leaving her scrambling to fill in the slack their little hanky-panky created when somehow the files were never quite taken care of and case assignations fell through and Matheson was delegating more and more to her. Great training for taking over his job one day.
Bad for her nerves.
Especially bad for nerves that were already shredded into thin bits of raw meat by every day spent pretending she didnât know what she knew; didnât keep the secrets she kept; didnât carry things she wished sheâd never discovered, but couldnât carve out of her brain to make Matheson look like just a man again. An annoying man, an arrogant man, a man drunk on his own authority, but just a man.
And not a snake, coiled and waiting to bite.
Coiled and waiting to kill, and swallow another life whole.
Maybe more than one.
There were things about Matheson that Anjulie wouldnât tell her. Things that cut so deep Anjulie got that look in her eyes, that look she only ever got one other time, and if the two were connected, if Matheson had been the one involved in that, in the terrible day that had shaped Anjulie into who she would becomeâ¦
Gabrielleâs heart would break.
And she didnât think sheâd be able to keep up the façade anymore.
So for right now, sheâd rather not know. Sheâd rather just deal.
